Baroness Scotland of Asthal becomes the first black woman to be appointed to Queen’s Counsel.

She was 35 years old, making her the youngest person in over 200 years to be appointed to the silk. She specialised in family and children’s law at Middle Temple. She went on to serve as a member of the Commission for Racial Equality and received a life peerage in 1997.
